The marketing mix, commonly accepted to be made up of four (product, price, place, promotion) or seven parts (people, processes, and physical environments) is an excellent framework for developing marketing plans.
Once the marketing objectives have been agreed, marketing plans must be developed to provide a structure for how the goals will be achieved and the indicators for measuring progress.
